BT Openreach recognised that old-fashioned PSTN equipment was quite simply no longer up to the job and so upgrading of the old PSTN copper wires began.

By 2025 Openreach will have swapped outdated wires for fibre-optic cables as the Big
PSTN Switch Off comes to the fore. In a nutshell, that means ‘goodbye landlines’ for all
UK businesses and homes - the digital network is the future!

Any telephone lines that aren’t running over the internet through IP will no longer work - it’s that simple.
